Weight Loss Drugs/Medications There are three main types of weight loss medications:
All have potentially dangerous side effects and none should be taken indefinitely. Also keep in mind that weight loss medications are only intended to be used by those individuals who have a significant amount of weight to lose. Drugs used for weight loss are generally referred to as anorexiants. Although there isn’t a lot of research regarding the effectiveness of many weight loss drugs, a majority of them do have the potential to produce successful results when used appropriately and in addition to other weight loss measures, including exercise and behavioral modifications. The long-term effects of weight loss medications have not been established. Most of them seem to lose their effectiveness over time, thus requiring a higher dosage to produce the same results. In addition, weight loss medications are often addictive. None of them deal with the underlying causes of obesity, so unless instructed by a doctor, it is best for an individual to use non-drug methods to lose unwanted weight. Except under rare circumstances, pregnant or nursing women should not use weight loss medications, including over-the-counter and herbal remedies. |
